The Centre has approved 14 new campuses of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) across multiple states, with several already functioning from transit facilities as part of efforts to strengthen forensic infrastructure and the criminal justice system.
Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply that the new campuses will come up in states including Goa, Tripura, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Maharashtra, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
He said land has been allocated in several locations such as Agartala, Bhopal, Dharwad, Guwahati, Nagpur, Khordha, Raipur and Chengalpattu. Campuses in these regions, along with Jaipur, are currently operating from temporary premises while permanent infrastructure is under development.
“These collaborations are part of an ongoing process to enhance research and capacity building in forensic sciences,” the minister said, referring to partnerships being pursued by the Directorate of Forensic Science Services and NFSU with national and international institutions.

The government has also approved co-location of NFSU campuses with Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs) in six states, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, to promote coordination between academic training, research and operational forensic services.
The move is aimed at building skilled manpower, improving access to modern forensic techniques and strengthening scientific investigation processes. The minister noted that steps are being taken to enhance the forensic ecosystem in the country to improve the quality and timeliness of justice delivery.
The NFSU offers more than 60 academic programmes across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels in fields such as forensic science, cyber security, digital forensics and behavioural science. Its curriculum includes crime scene management and specialised training programmes for stakeholders.
Apart from NFSU, the Centre is also expanding CFSL infrastructure. The country currently has seven CFSLs, and approval has been granted for eight more in states including Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Kerala.
Land has already been allocated for some of these new CFSLs, including in Jammu and Kashmir, Chengalpattu, Khordha and Raipur.
