Snapchat owner Snap has announced its latest generative AI technology, designed to enhance augmented reality (AR) effects for user videos.
This advancement aims to offer more realistic special effects through phone cameras, positioning Snap ahead of its social media rivals in the AR space.
Snap, renowned for pioneering AR by overlaying computerized effects onto real-world photos and videos, is leveraging this new technology to attract users and advertisers. Despite being smaller than competitors like Meta, Snap is betting on advanced and whimsical special effects, known as lenses, to grow its user base.
The company announced that AR developers can now create AI-powered lenses, which will be available for Snapchat users to integrate into their content.
Additionally, Snap introduced an upgraded version of its developer program, Lens Studio, which artists and developers can use to create AR features for Snapchat and other platforms.
Bobby Murphy, Snap’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized that the enhanced Lens Studio would significantly reduce the time needed to create AR effects, from weeks to mere hours, while allowing for more intricate designs. “What’s fun for us is that these tools both stretch the creative space in which people can work, but they’re also easy to use, so newcomers can build something unique very quickly,” Murphy said in an interview.
The new Lens Studio includes a suite of generative AI tools, featuring an AI assistant to help developers with queries and a tool that allows artists to type prompts to automatically generate three-dimensional images for their AR lenses.
This innovation removes the need to create 3D models from scratch, streamlining the development process.
