PM Modi meets UAE President in Abu Dhabi, launches UPI RuPay card service

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on a two-day visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), alongside UAE President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, introduced Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

 

The move underscores the growing digital cooperation between India and the UAE, aimed at enhancing financial connectivity and convenience for citizens of both nations.

 

The occasion was marked by a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Al Nahyan, during which several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged, further solidifying the multifaceted relationship between the two countries. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra were among the notable members of the Indian delegation present during the discussions.

 

Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the unprecedented frequency of meetings between the leaders, symbolizing the robust partnership between India and the UAE across various sectors. He reiterated the shared commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation, emphasizing the significant strides made in every field.

 

Upon his arrival at the airport, Prime Minister Modi was warmly welcomed by UAE President Al Nahyan, with the leaders exchanging cordial gestures of handshake and embrace. In a social media post, PM Modi expressed appreciation for the gracious reception and conveyed anticipation for a productive visit aimed at strengthening the enduring friendship between India and the UAE.

 

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi also received a guard of honor, underscoring the significance of the bilateral engagement. Ahead of his departure, he reiterated his eagerness to meet with President Al Nahyan, highlighting their close rapport and shared vision for enhancing bilateral relations.

 

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal underscored the itinerary of Prime Minister Modi's visit, emphasizing engagements with UAE leadership and community members, as well as the inauguration of the BAPS Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi, a testament to the cultural ties between India and the UAE.

 

The introduction of UPI services in Abu Dhabi adds another milestone to India's digital diplomacy efforts, following similar launches in Sri Lanka and Mauritius.  With UPI services gaining traction globally, countries like France, Singapore, Bhutan, and Nepal, among others, have utilised the platform, facilitating seamless digital transactions and fostering greater financial inclusivity.
