A woman Naxalite carrying a bounty of ₹5 lakh was killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district on Monday, police officials confirmed.
The exchange of fire took place in a forested area under the Chhote Bethiya police station limits during the morning hours. According to officials, a joint team of security personnel was out on an anti-Naxalite operation when the encounter occurred.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Kanker, Nikhil Rakhecha, stated that the deceased has been identified as Rupi, an Area Commander associated with the Maoists’ Partapur area committee. “Naxal Area Commander Rupi was killed in an encounter with security forces in the forest under Chhote Betia police station limits,” he said.
Police recovered the body of the woman Naxalite along with a weapon from the spot. The operation was still underway in the area at the time of reporting, and further details are awaited.
The incident comes just 12 days after the government declared Chhattisgarh free of armed Maoists on March 31, highlighting the continued presence of insurgent activity in certain regions.
