A 40-year-old woman was found dead under shocking circumstances in the forests of Nodakhali’s Bidira area in South 24 Parganas late Saturday night, triggering tension and outrage across the locality. Locals discovered her lying half-clothed and bearing injury marks all over her body. They immediately informed the police. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
According to the deceased’s family, the woman was allegedly raped and then murdered. They have claimed that bloodstains were found at the spot, pointing to signs of violence. Locals reported that she had stepped out briefly after completing her household work when she was allegedly dragged into the forest.
Police from Nodakhali station reached the scene soon after receiving information and initiated an investigation. Considering the gravity of the incident, additional security forces have been deployed in the area.
Two persons have been detained in connection with the case. One of them is reportedly a local BJP leader, while the other is a minor. Both are currently being interrogated. Residents allege that the detained political leader had faced multiple complaints earlier, though the police have not confirmed any such claims. “The interrogation is ongoing. It is not possible to comment at this stage,” a police officer said.
The victim’s family has demanded swift justice, alleging that she was targeted when alone. “They dragged her away and killed her. We want strict punishment,” a family member said.
A special investigation team has been formed to handle the case. Police suspect the woman may have known the person who lured her out of her home. Further clarity on the cause and timing of death is expected after the forensic examination is completed.
