Following the landmark success of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), who won 108 seats in their first-ever election, actor turned politician, Vijay, is believed to be considering an alliance for reaching the majority mark of 118 seats. According to sources, the leader of TVK is now ready to hold discussions with the Congress, Left, and smaller political parties.

The strategy involves reaching out to members of the existing DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the CPI, the CPI (M), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). During the polls on 23 April, the Congress secured five seats, while the other smaller allies collectively won eight. Should these parties decide to switch their allegiance to the TVK, Vijay’s party would comfortably surpass the threshold required to form the next government.

The TVK’s performance has fundamentally reshaped the state's political map, unseating the MK Stalin-led DMK, which was reduced to 59 seats. In a result that has stunned the political establishment, the caretaker Chief Minister even lost his own stronghold of Kolathur. Meanwhile, the AIADMK has been relegated to a distant third place with only 47 seats, marking the first time in over thirty years that the traditional Dravidian duopoly has been so decisively challenged.

Addressing the speculation surrounding a potential partnership, Congress MP Sasikanth Senthil stated that his party would weigh its options carefully, prioritising the interests of Tamil Nadu. While acknowledging the clear mandate for change, Senthil emphasised that the Congress is not "opportunistic" and would only make a move that aligns with its secular ideology. He noted that while internal discussions are ongoing, any final decision regarding a formal pact with the TVK rests with the party’s central leadership and parliamentary committee in Delhi. For now, the Congress maintains it remains aligned with the DMK, though the shifting arithmetic of the assembly suggests that a realignment remains a distinct possibility.
