The Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra resumed on Thursday following a brief suspension due to bad weather, officials said. The pilgrimage resumed after a long 22-day suspension due to landslides and flash floods triggered by the heavy rains and cloudburst in the region.

The yatra resumed on Wednesday for hours before it was suspended again due to hostile weather conditions. With the weather improving, the yatra resumed this morning.

The officials said the yatra was progressing smoothly and registrations were taking place accordingly.

Yatris who have been waiting for days for services to resume expressed their joy over the resumption of the yatra. “The registrations have now started, and we will be going to perform darshan. We are confident of having her (Mata) darshan and seeking blessings,” said waiting yatris at base camp.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) announced the reopening of the Yatra, subject to better weather and road conditions, from Wednesday morning.

The announcement brought much relief to the pilgrims who were camping in the Katra town for days, the base camp for visiting the shrine.

However, the respite was short-lived, as the Shrine Board once again suspended the yatra amid inclement weather on Wednesday evening after allowing 2,500 pilgrims during the day, the officials said.

The ongoing weather conditions have disrupted the yatra, besides affecting normal life in Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu, especially, was battered by the rain fury and cloudbursts that triggered flash floods and landslides, killing tens of people while causing infrastructure damage to the residential and government buildings and public-private properties.
