In a shocking incident that has stunned residents of Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow, a 19-year-old youth allegedly shot his father dead and dismembered the body in an attempt to conceal the crime. The accused was taken into custody after police recovered the remains from their residence on Monday evening.
The deceased, identified as 49-year-old Manvendra Singh, was a pathology lab operator and liquor businessman. He lived in Ashiana with his son Akshat Pratap Singh, also known as Raja, and his daughter. His wife had passed away about nine years ago.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Vikram Veer Singh, the incident took place in the early hours of February 20 following an argument between the father and son. Police said Akshat allegedly used a rifle to shoot his father after a heated dispute over studies and preparation for competitive examinations.
Investigators said the accused later attempted to conceal the crime by disposing of the body parts at different locations. During questioning, Akshat reportedly confessed to the crime.
Police said Akshat had been under pressure from his father to focus on his studies and prepare for competitive exams, which often led to arguments between them. On the morning of the incident, the disagreement escalated, resulting in the fatal shooting.
Between February 20 and February 23, the accused allegedly tried to hide evidence of the crime. The remains were placed inside a drum in the house, while other parts were disposed of elsewhere, police said.
The crime came to light on Monday at around 4 PM when neighbours noticed a foul smell coming from the house and alerted the police. Upon searching the premises, officers recovered the remains and sent them for postmortem examination.
In an attempt to mislead investigators, Akshat had also filed a missing person complaint for his father at Ashiana police station on the same day as the alleged murder.
According to neighbours, Akshat is a B.Com student at TS Mishra College, while his sister is a Class 11 student. Manvendra Singh owned Vardhman Pathology Lab in Saleh Nagar and Budheshwar Road and also operated liquor contracts. His brother, SS Rajawat, is a constable in the Uttar Pradesh Police and was away on duty at the time of the incident.
A neighbour, Dharmendra Singh, said the accused initially claimed that his father had died by suicide. However, the claim raised suspicion among family friends. After being questioned repeatedly, Akshat allegedly broke down and confessed.
Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation into the incident.
