The Uttarakhand Cabinet on Wednesday raised the ex-gratia amount for families of people killed in human-wildlife conflict to Rs 10 lakh, officials said. The compensation earlier was Rs 6 lakh.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had earlier announced this raise during the inauguration of ‘Wildlife Week’ on October 3. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Dhami.

Several other issues related to wildlife safety were also discussed.

Dhami also announced that the state government will bear the full cost of treatment for people injured in attacks by wild animals such as leopards and bears.

He said that no victim should suffer due to financial constraints.

Dhami directed officials to ensure timely and adequate medical care for injured persons and asked them to avoid any delay in treatment. He said necessary resources should be made available immediately.

He also instructed officials to strengthen security and awareness efforts in affected areas. He added that the focus is on preventing more such incidents.

So far this year, five individuals have died and 69 have been hurt in bear attacks in Uttarakhand, officials said. They added that leopard attacks have killed 12 people and injured 88 others.
