CM Saha pledges an additional Rs 2.30 crore in relief, with Rs 239 crore earmarked for special development in the area.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha visited the violence-affected Gandatwisa area in Dhalai district on Sunday, announcing a substantial Rs 242 crore relief and development package.

The visit comes 23 days after the region was rocked by ethnic tension, arson, and violence.

Chief Minister Saha declared that the state will provide an additional Rs 2.30 crore in relief, supplementing the previously announced aid, and allocate Rs 239 crore for a special development package aimed at the area’s recovery.

The announcement follows complaints from the Opposition CPI(M) and Congress regarding inadequate facilities at relief camps housing displaced villagers.

Addressing media persons, Saha stated, “I have visited numerous areas and spoken with the victims and the parents of the deceased youth. It is indeed a tragic incident. I have directed the civil and police administration to take the necessary steps. Assistance has already been provided to the victims and the family of the deceased. Those conspiring to instigate ethnic strife will face legal action.”

Saha further revealed plans to establish security camps at 33KV and 30 Card, both proximate to the violence-hit neighbourhoods.

He also outlined future projects for Gandatwisa, including setting up a market at Narayanpur, constructing a 51 km-long Gandacherra-Ambadsa Road, and developing cage farming for fisheries at Lake Dumboor.

The ethnic violence erupted following the death of a tribal youth, Parameshwar Reang, who was injured in a clash last month. The violence resulted in damage to around 40 houses, 30 shops, and several government vehicles.

In the aftermath, over 200 people sought refuge in relief camps. The local administration responded by shutting down internet services and imposing a curfew to restore order.
