The post-mortem examinations proceeded on January 31, 2026 at Government Hospital and Medical College in Virudhunagar after an explosion that occurred at a fireworks unit at Kattanarpatti village. Among the 23 people killed in the explosion on January 30, 2026, only 19 people could be identified, considering that the intense burns make the procedure extremely difficult for the relatives waiting outside the mortuary.
In view of this terrible occurrence, many condolences poured out from the highest authorities of the country. In this regard, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that it is "highly distressing," whereas Union Home Minister Amit Shah prayed for speedy recovery of the victims of the fire. In Chennai, Chief Minister MK Stalin dispatched senior ministers KKSSR Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu to the site to oversee relief efforts, confirming that he had instructed the District Collector to prioritise the needs of the victims’ families.
However, the accident has also ignited a fierce political debate over safety standards in Tamil Nadu’s firecracker hub. Opposition leaders were quick to condemn what they described as a recurring failure of oversight. AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami hit out at the DMK administration, alleging that loss of life in these factories has become a "recurring saga" under Stalin’s leadership. He accused the government of ignoring repeated warnings and substituted genuine safety reform with mere "photo-ops."
Echoing these concerns, PMK President Anbumani Ramadoss pointed out that more than 170 lives have been lost in similar accidents over the last five years. A huge compensation was demanded, and 25 lakh rupees per family for the deceased victims was recommended. The State President of Bharatiya Janata Party, K Annamalai, requested the district administration to make sure that the victims get the best medical treatment possible. In the wake of the deaths in Virudhunagar, the government is under increasing pressure to act swiftly and conduct the required inspection to avert any future disaster.
