Tihar DG’s request to AIIMS for doctor: AAP says BJP lies ‘exposed’

Saurabh Bharadwaj criticised the BJP-led Centre for saying they had specialists and insulin available in jail.

- New Delhi - UPDATED: April 21, 2024, 04:48 PM - 2 min read

On the warpath: AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj has questioned the intentions of the BJP government in denying Kejriwal insulin to treat his diabetes. (PTI files).

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday raised alarm over jailed Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s health, with senior AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj alleging in a press conference in New Delhi on Sunday that a conspiracy was being hatched by the BJP to kill him.

Showing a letter dated April 20 at a press conference, Bharadwaj claimed it was sent by Director General of Prisons Sanjay Beniwal to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) requesting the top Delhi hospital to send a diabetologist for Kejriwal.

"The DG of Tihar jail yesterday wrote to AIIMS that we need a diabetologist." This 'exposes' the BJP not just before Indians but also before the international media watching this (press conference) because the BJP-led Centre has been saying that they have specialists and insulin available in jail," news agencies quoted Bharadwaj as saying.

Bharadwaj said the Delhi CM had said he had been taking insulin after being diagnosed with diabetes and needed to consult a specialist. If one was not available, the CM had requested that he be allowed to consult his own doctor through video conferencing.

Bharadwaj said the BJP-led Central government had said Kejriwal did not require insulin and that doctors were looking after him.

The AAP leader said he did not know who the “sadharan" (ordinary) doctor was, where he was and why on his recommendation all the “manipulation” was being done to deny medication to an elected CM.

Jail officials later clarified that a doctor from AIIMS had been consulted through video conferencing at the request of Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita.
