South Kashmir receives fresh snowfall as cold wave eases

Fresh snowfall hit parts of south Kashmir while rain lashed the plains as night temperatures improved.


Parts of the Kashmir Valley received fresh snowfall while rain lashed the plains, with night temperatures showing further improvement on Saturday night, officials said on Sunday. 

 

Fresh snowfall occurred in the upper reaches and rural areas of south Kashmir, including the famous tourist resort Pahalgam and the Qazigund area of Kulgam district, while many parts of south Kashmir were hit by rain.

 

Srinagar city and adjoining areas experienced light rainfall on Sunday morning.

 

The summer capital recorded a minimum temperature of 2 degrees Celsius on Saturday night, up from minus 0.1 degrees Celsius the previous night, 2.6 degrees above the seasonal normal.

 

While temperature data for several places, including Sonamarg in Ganderbal district, was unavailable, Gulmarg in north Kashmir remained the coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir with a minimum temperature below minus 7 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department in Srinagar said Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius, up from minus 2.6 degrees Celsius the previous day, 3.8 degrees higher than the seasonal normal.

 

Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of 0.4 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag recorded zero degrees Celsius, and Kupwara recorded a low of minus 1.7 degrees Celsius.

 

Meanwhile, the MeT Department has forecast that cloudy weather conditions with the possibility of rain and snowfall are likely to persist in the Valley for the next 24 hours.

 

Light rain, with snow in the higher reaches, is possible at scattered to widespread places on February 2–3, officials said.
