The Sikkim government has called for urgent assistance from the Indian Air Force (IAF) to airlift approximately 1,400 tourists stranded in North Sikkim following heavy rains and landslides.

The severe weather, which began on Thursday, has caused extensive damage to roads and bridges, leaving many areas inaccessible and tourists marooned.

Officials reported that the torrential rains led to landslides that washed away key infrastructure, stranding tourists in various locations. The state government has requested the IAF to deploy helicopters and necessary resources for the evacuation.

As part of the ongoing rescue efforts, more than 50 fire tenders and 200 firefighters have been mobilised to control the situation.

The immediate focus is on providing relief and ensuring the safety of those affected. Local authorities are coordinating with the IAF to facilitate swift rescue operations.

The Sikkim government is also working to restore the damaged infrastructure to reopen routes and prevent further disruptions. Residents and visitors have been urged to exercise caution and adhere to safety advisories.

Further updates will be provided as the situation develops and rescue operations progress.

The state government’s prompt action underscores the seriousness of the crisis and their commitment to ensuring the safety of all affected.
