The Mumbai Crime Branch has detained a bodyguard of Mauris Noronha, the assailant who fatally shot Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Abhishek Ghosalkar during a 'Facebook Live' before taking his own life.

Noronha, who harboured a longstanding grudge against Ghosalkar, utilised his bodyguard's pistol to carry out the crime.

According to officials, the pistol used by Noronha belonged to his bodyguard, Amarendra Mishra, with the weapon's licence registered in Mishra's name.

Mishra is currently being questioned by the Crime Branch regarding his involvement in the incident.

Noronha's family members, including his wife, revealed to the police that he held a deep-seated resentment against ex-corporator Abhishek Ghosalkar.

Noronha, who had political aspirations, believed Ghosalkar had falsely implicated him in a previous rape case, resulting in Noronha spending nearly five months behind bars.

Despite initial attempts to mend relations by putting up banners supporting Ghosalkar, Noronha's resentment persisted. The fateful encounter occurred when Noronha invited Ghosalkar to his office under the pretext of distributing sarees to women, proposing a Facebook Live session to announce their reconciliation.

During the live broadcast, Noronha unexpectedly opened fire on Ghosalkar using his bodyguard's pistol before turning the gun on himself, resulting in both their deaths.

A case has been registered based on a complaint filed by a friend of Ghosalkar who was present during the incident.

Meanwhile, police vigilance remains high in the area, with shops shuttered and calm prevailing amidst a sizable crowd near the offices of Noronha and Ghosalkar.
