The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday has taken strict disciplinary action against seven central force personnel deployed in West Bengal for election duty after they allegedly violated election duty norms by accepting an invitation and attending a social event.
According to Election Commission sources, personnel assigned to election security are strictly prohibited from attending any social gatherings or accepting invitations, in order to maintain neutrality and public confidence during the electoral process.
However, the seven personnel — posted in Murshidabad district — reportedly attended an social event after accepting an invitation, triggering serious concerns over breach of protocol.
Officials said that an inquiry was initiated immediately after the complaint was received. The allegations were later confirmed through evidence, following which the Commission acted swiftly.
Two of the personnel have been taken into custody as per paramilitary regulations, while the remaining five have been transferred out of the state. Departmental proceedings have been initiated against all seven individuals.
The action comes ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Election, scheduled to be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The poll schedule was announced on March 15.
Even before the official announcement, central forces had begun arriving in the state in phases earlier this month. So far, around 480 companies have been deployed across districts, conducting route marches and interacting with local residents.
An additional 1,920 companies are expected to arrive before the first phase of polling, further strengthening security arrangements.
Election Commission officials described the action as part of a zero-tolerance approach toward any deviation from duty during elections. They said that such strict enforcement, particularly over accepting invitations, is rare but necessary to ensure impartiality.
The Commission has indicated that this case will be used as a cautionary example during training sessions for election-duty personnel to prevent similar violations in the future.
With heightened vigilance and increased deployment of forces, authorities aim to ensure a free, fair, and transparent electoral process in the state.
