Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M Scindia has renewed his push for a structured and discipline-specific sports strategy for the Northeast, calling the “One Sport Discipline — One State” approach crucial for targeted investment and long-term athletic excellence in the region.
Scindia and Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Wednesday co-chaired the third and final meeting of the High-Level Task Force (HLTF) on the promotion of sports in the Northeast via video conference. The meeting assessed ongoing initiatives, reviewed gaps in systems, and discussed plans for building a coordinated and evidence-based framework for talent development.
Sharing photographs of the meeting on X, Scindia wrote, “Reinforced the ‘One Sport, One State’ approach, urging all participating states to focus on the development of a comprehensive sports strategy based on their chosen disciplines.”
He added, “Highlighted the need to focus on high-quality coaching, talent identification and technology-enabled training for our athletes, with infrastructure complementing the effort for a result-oriented roadmap for NER. Together, we are laying the foundation for the north east to emerge as India’s hub of high-performance sporting excellence.”

The meeting was attended by Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Youth Affairs Secretary Hariranjan Rao, the sports ministers of Meghalaya and Mizoram, senior officials from the Ministry of DoNER, and representatives from the northeastern states.
According to Imphal Raj Bhavan, the task force reviewed progress on earlier recommendations, including strengthening high-performance centres, improving last-mile infrastructure, applying scientific coaching methodologies, and establishing structured competition pathways. The discussions also covered the creation of talent pipelines, integration of sports science, and the need for technology-enabled training support.
States were encouraged to refine priority disciplines based on comparative strengths and existing ecosystems, and to submit comprehensive proposals aligned with long-term performance goals.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen Centre–state cooperation and push the Northeast towards becoming a major high-performance sports hub through coordinated planning and sustained investment.
