Ranjeet Kumar Dass was on Thursday unanimously elected Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly, marking his second term in the post. Protem Speaker Chandra Mohan Patowary announced that three nominations were received in favour of Dass and no member contested the election.

“As there is no other nomination, I declare Ranjeet Kumar Dass as the Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly,” he said in the House.

Dass, a four-time BJP MLA from Bhowanipur-Sorbhog, had earlier served as Speaker in 2016 when the BJP formed its first government in Assam. He also held the post of Assam BJP state president and was a Cabinet minister in Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s previous term (2021–2026).

A legislator since 2011, Dass has been elected to the Assembly for four consecutive terms.

Himanta Biswa Sarma takes oath as MLA

Himanta Biswa Sarma
on Thursday took oath as a Member of the Legislative Assembly on the first day of the newly constituted 16th Assam Assembly, as the ruling NDA began its fresh term in the House.

Protem Speaker Chandra Mohan Patowary administered the oath to Sarma, who affirmed his allegiance in Assamese. Patowary informed the House that members were free to take oath in any recognised language, with submissions to the Assembly office.

Following the Chief Minister, other MLAs began taking oath in Assamese, Bengali, Bodo and Sanskrit, reflecting the linguistic diversity of the state.

The NDA alliance, comprising the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), secured a strong mandate in the recent polls, winning 102 seats in the 126-member House. The BJP alone won 82 seats, while AGP and BPF secured 10 each.

Among the Opposition, the Congress won 19 seats, Raijor Dal two, while the AIUDF and Trinamool Congress secured two and one seat respectively.
