Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, made a poignant visit on Monday to relief camps in Manipur's Jiribam and Churachandpur districts, where victims of ethnic violence have sought refuge.

Accompanied by senior Congress leaders, Gandhi's visit marks his third since the outbreak of violence in Manipur last year, underscoring his steadfast dedication to the welfare of those affected.

"The visit underscores Gandhi's commitment to the people's cause," highlighted a statement from the Congress, reflecting on his ongoing engagement in the region.

Gandhi's itinerary commenced at Jiribam Higher Secondary School, where he interacted closely with displaced individuals, listening to their harrowing accounts and empathetically addressing their needs.

State Congress president Keisham Meghachandra conveyed that Gandhi's presence resonated deeply among the residents, with one young girl expressing disappointment over the absence of visits from the Prime Minister and Chief Minister, urging Gandhi to advocate their plight in Parliament.

The emotional encounters continued as thousands turned out to greet Gandhi, many moved to tears during their interactions, Meghachandra noted.

From Jiribam, Gandhi proceeded via Silchar in Assam to Tuibong village in Churachandpur district, where another relief camp awaited. Here, he continued to engage with inmates, seeking firsthand insights into their challenges and aspirations.

"The visit aims to provide support and assess ground realities," Meghachandra affirmed, highlighting the Congress's commitment to addressing the aftermath of the violence and ensuring justice for the affected communities.

Before concluding his visit, Gandhi is scheduled to meet with Governor Anusuiya Uikey in Imphal, further underscoring efforts to advocate for comprehensive support and relief measures.

The ethnic violence, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May last year, has tragically claimed over 200 lives in Manipur, prompting urgent humanitarian responses and advocacy efforts.
