The Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla has suspended two second-year MBBS students for three months and fined them Rs 50,000 each for violating hostel rules in an incident linked to ragging, officials stated.
The action followed an alleged incident at the college hostel three days back. The two senior students had allegedly called juniors to the hostel, which is against institutional rules. According to IGMC norms, junior students are not allowed to enter or stay in hostels until official accommodation is allotted to them.
College authorities said an internal probe was started soon after the matter was brought to notice. The inquiry found that while the incident did not amount to serious or severe ragging, it was a clear breach of discipline and hostel regulations. Based on this, the case was placed before the disciplinary committee.
Acting on the committee’s recommendations, the two students were suspended from academic activities for three months and fine of Rs 50,000 each was imposed. The rooms where the junior students were reportedly taken were also inspected during the probe. The panel issued a strict warning, stating that any repeat of such behaviour would invite harsher punishment.
Dr Jagjeet Singh Chahal, Member Secretary of the Anti-Ragging Committee at IGMC Shimla, said the matter was tracked through CCTV cameras and the hostel’s anti-ragging monitoring system. He said two second-year students were found involved in ragging three juniors, following which action was taken.
Another associate of the disciplinary panel said that although the incident technically fell under ragging, it was not considered very serious. Hence, disciplinary action was taken instead of invoking provisions of the Ragging Act.
The IGMC administration restated its zero-tolerance stance on ragging and indiscipline, stressing that hostel rules and student safety would be enforced strictly. An official response from the college administration could not be obtained despite repeated attempts.
