Heavy Punjab Police deployment outside Chandigarh’s Sector 3 station.

Over 200 Punjab Police officers were stationed outside the Sector 3 Police Station in Chandigarh through the night, keeping watch in case Navneet Chaturvedi tried to leave.

Chaturvedi has been kept inside the police station by Chandigarh Police, who say they are protecting him.

It is learnt that his lawyers are approaching the court for anticipatory bail. They are also demanding a probe into the rejection of his Rajya Sabha nomination papers. Among the senior officials present at the police station is SP of Ropar Police, GS Gosal.

Chaturvedi had filed two sets of nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha by-election scheduled for October 24. His first set, filed on October 6, listed 10 AAP MLAs as proposers but did not have their signatures. He submitted a second set of nomination papers on October 13. This set carried the names of the same 10 AAP MLAs, along with their signatures.

During scrutiny of the papers on Tuesday, Chaturvedi’s nomination was rejected. Officials claimed the signatures of all ten MLAs were forged.

On Monday night, most of the 10 MLAs had already approached the police in their districts, saying their signatures were forged by Chaturvedi and asking for an FIR.

An FIR was registered against Chaturvedi at the Ropar Police Station on Monday night. At the same time, Chandigarh Police and Chaturvedi said he had sought police protection, which was provided.

He went to the Vidhan Sabha for scrutiny of his papers under Chandigarh Police protection. Later, when he was returning under police protection, Ropar Police tried to intercept the vehicle and arrest him.

Chaturvedi was then taken to the Chandigarh SSP office and later shifted to Sector 3 Police Station. Chandigarh Police refused to hand him over to Ropar Police, even though the latter later presented an arrest warrant.
