Congress member of parliament Priyanka Gandhi Vadra lambasted the central government on Wednesday for their selective utilisation of the parliamentary time, as it is evident from the difference between the number of hours spent discussing a particular topic and the reluctance towards accepting complete debates sought by the opposition.
While addressing the media, she said, “Why is it that the government can spend several hours on topics such as the national song but never accepts the motion of adjournment which is raised due to issues of national importance?” After spending ten hours debating Vande Mataram and enacting related laws, the government should not be reluctant to allow a complete discussion on pressing issues faced by the nation’s youth.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra clarified that the Opposition had raised an adjournment motion only for the purpose of having a proper discussion on the NEET controversy. According to her, if the parliament could spare eight hours for discussion on the issue of Vande Mataram, there was no problem in holding a lengthy discussion on the issue of leaks in examinations through an adjournment motion.
In addition to the Opposition’s views, Jairam Ramesh, Congress MP, stated that several political parties, headed by the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, filed a notice under Rule 267 for suspension of listed business immediately. The purpose of filing the notice was to highlight the controversy of NEET, arrest of students protesting against the move by the police, and arrest of several political leaders. According to Ramesh, the present impasse in Parliament is solely because of the government’s unwillingness to hold debate under Rule 267 but only insisting on holding discussion.
