Prateek Yadav, the younger son of the late Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav and half-brother to party president Akhilesh Yadav, passed away in Lucknow on Wednesday at the age of 38. Married to BJP leader Aparna Yadav, Prateek was reportedly rushed to the city’s Civil Hospital at approximately 6 am, where medical staff tragically declared him dead on arrival.

It is understood that Prateek had been battling ill health for a considerable period. Only a few weeks prior, he had been admitted to Medanta Hospital, where he received a visit from Akhilesh Yadav. Although his condition had initially shown signs of improvement, allowing him to return home, the reprieve proved short-lived. The Samajwadi Party expressed its grief through a statement on X, describing his passing as "deeply saddening" and offering prayers for his soul.

Unlike many members of his high-profile political dynasty, Prateek chose to forge a path outside the legislative arena. An alumnus of the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, he focused his professional energies on the real estate sector and the fitness industry, notably managing ‘The Fitness Planet’ gym in Lucknow. He was also well-regarded for his commitment to animal welfare, working extensively with ‘Jeev Ashray’, an organisation dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of stray animals.

In recent months, Prateek had sought to dispel rumours of a domestic rift with his wife, Aparna—who currently serves as the vice-chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission—by sharing photographs of the family holidaying together.

Given the sudden nature of his death, a post-mortem examination is being conducted at the KGMU mortuary. The procedure is being overseen by the Chief Medical Officer and a specialised medical panel, including forensic experts. Officials have confirmed that the process will include chest X-rays and full videography to ensure a thorough record of the findings. As family members, including Aparna Yadav’s brother Aman Bisht, gathered at the mortuary, a heavy police presence was established to maintain order during the proceedings.
