Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday firmly underlined the need to respect the mandate of elected representatives, ensure institutional independence, and uphold the rule of law, asserting that courts alone are empowered to decide guilt or innocence in terror-related cases.
“Political interference weakens institutions and governance. Departments and corporations must be allowed to function independently and professionally. Decisions taken outside the framework of accountability are a cause for concern,” he said, adding that institutions like the Power Development Corporation should operate free from external pressure to ensure efficiency and public confidence.
Speaking to reporters at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, the Chief Minister addressed a range of issues, including the Chadoora demolition controversy, concerns over alleged political interference in government institutions, efforts to revive tourism, and the filing of a chargesheet in the Pahalgam terror attack case.
On the Chadoora issue, Omar Abdullah said that such matters must be resolved through coordination between elected MLAs and the administration. He stressed that public representatives are chosen by the people and must be accorded due dignity, consultation, and respect in administrative decision-making.
“Elected representatives embody the will of the people. Their role cannot be ignored. With cooperation between the concerned MLA and the administration, solutions will emerge,” the Chief Minister said.He also voiced serious concern over reports suggesting political interference in the functioning of government departments and public sector undertakings, describing the trend as deeply troubling.
Turning to tourism, Omar Abdullah acknowledged that recent security concerns had led to some cancellations. However, he said the government is actively working to restore confidence ahead of the Christmas and New Year season.Commenting on the National Investigation Agency (NIA) filing a chargesheet in the Pahalgam terror attack case, the Chief Minister reiterated his long-held view that once an investigation is complete, the matter must be left entirely to the judiciary.
“The investigation has been conducted and the chargesheet is being filed. It is now for the court to decide who is guilty and who is innocent. That authority lies with the judiciary, not with political leaders,” Omar Abdullah said.
He emphasized that due process must be followed in all cases, whether related to terror incidents or administrative actions, stating that the rule of law must prevail above all else.
