Police officials in Erode have declined permission to hold a public meeting for TVK chief Vijay on December 16. The request was submitted by former minister KA Sengottaiyan, who recently joined the party, according to department sources.

Erode is the home turf of Sengottaiyan, a nine-time MLA and former minister who joined the actor-politician's party after being expelled from the AIADMK. The planned meeting would have served as an opportunity for him to demonstrate his organisational strength in a large-scale event.

Speaking to reporters, Sengottaiyan had confirmed, "The TVK chief will visit Erode on December 16 and address a public meeting in a private land near a marriage hall." He submitted petitions seeking permission to both District Collector S Kandasamy and officials at the District Police Office.

Following the application, Superintendent of Police A Sujatha inspected the proposed venue— a seven-acre site in the Pavalathampalayam area on Erode-Perundurai Road.

Police officials later told the media that the TVK petition estimated a crowd of 70,000 people.

They explained the denial of permission: "The site proposed by them is quite inadequate to accommodate that much crowd and their vehicles and hence permission was declined," they stated. The officials confirmed the decision was communicated to Sengottaiyan, and he was advised to choose an alternate spot for the meeting.
