PM Modi (L) called Assam CM Sarma (R) to discuss Assam's severe flooding (C) and mitigation efforts as relentless rainfall submerges districts, impacting hundreds of thousands of residents.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his concern over the worsening flood situation in Assam, assuring Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of comprehensive support from the central government to tackle the crisis.

In a telephone conversation on Monday, PM Modi enquired about the extent of the flooding and the measures being taken to mitigate the disaster.

The state of Assam has been grappling with severe flooding due to relentless rainfall, which has submerged numerous districts and affected hundreds of thousands of residents.

"Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji called me a short while ago to enquire about the flood situation in Assam," Sarma wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

"I explained to him that Assam is experiencing a second wave of floods this year due to heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh and part of our upper Assam districts," he added.

Chief Minister Sarma detailed the ongoing relief efforts and highlighted the challenges posed by the heavy rains. PM Modi, in response, promised full cooperation from the central government.

"He assured me of full cooperation from the Government of India in this hour of crisis," Sarma confirmed.

The flood situation deteriorated significantly on Sunday, with two more fatalities reported and over 2.62 lakh people affected across eight districts.

The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, also reached out to Sarma to discuss the flood conditions, particularly in the districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia.

"Spoke to Hon'ble Assam CM Shri @himantabiswa over phone regarding the flood situation in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and other parts of the state. Requested him to provide all necessary assistance to the flood victims," Sonowal posted on X.

In response, Sarma assured Sonowal that the state administration was actively monitoring the situation and providing immediate relief to those affected.

"Our administration is taking all necessary measures and stands firmly with the people of Dibrugarh and other affected areas in this hour of crisis," Sarma stated.

According to a special bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati, a cyclonic circulation over Assam and its surrounding areas is contributing to the severe weather.

"Widespread rainfall accompanied with heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam," the bulletin warned, adding that these conditions are expected to persist until July 4, with isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall.
