A day after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the BJP in the West Bengal assembly elections, MP Mahua Moitra stated on Tuesday that her party respects the mandate, affirming that the will of the people remains supreme. Her comments come as the party begins to process a historic shift in the state's political landscape.

Writing on X, Moitra acknowledged the decisive turn of events, noting that if the electorate chose the BJP, that choice must be honoured. The BJP made history on Monday by securing 206 seats — a commanding two-thirds majority — effectively ending fifteen years of TMC administration.

Despite the loss, Moitra expressed a sense of pride in her party’s efforts, suggesting they had "fought the good fight" against significant odds on what she described as an "uneven pitch." Her commitment to support Mamata Banerjee and the fundamental ideology of the party was unwavering.

In the future, Moitra predicted that the Trinamool Congress would continue to be an influential voice in the opposition with its commitment toward creating a secular nation. She underscored that the party would continue to advocate for a system where the constitution remains the final authority, rather than what she termed "brute majoritarianism."
