Himachal Pradesh is likely to witness heavy rain and hailstorms from May 28 because of a fresh western disturbance expected to affect north-west India. The change in weather may bring widespread rainfall activity across several parts of the state.
The Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Kangra and Chamba districts for May 28. Heavy rain, hailstorms, lightning and gusty winds are likely at isolated places in these areas. A yellow alert has also been issued for Solan, Hamirpur, Bilaspur and Una districts for thunderstorms, lightning and heatwave conditions on May 28.
According to the weather department, rainfall activity is expected to continue across the state till May 30. After that, weather conditions are likely to remain mostly clear in the plains and lower hills till June 2, though mid and higher hill areas may still receive rain. During this period, minimum temperatures may drop by 2°C to 3°C, while maximum temperatures are expected to fall by 2°C to 6°C in many places.
Meanwhile, most parts of the state remained dry during the past 24 hours. Minimum temperatures stayed close to normal and ranged between 4°C and 24°C. However, maximum temperatures were recorded 2°C to 4°C above normal and varied between 18°C and 44°C.
The maximum temperature recorded in Shimla was 29°C, while Dharamsala recorded 35°C and Kangra 38.8°C. Mandi recorded 38.6°C, Sundernagar 39.3°C, Kufri 24.1°C, Kalpa 25.4°C, Keylong 20.9°C, Nahan 36.6°C and Bhuntar 36°C.
Una was the hottest place in Himachal Pradesh with a maximum temperature of 44°C. Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti remained the coldest place in the state, recording a minimum temperature of 4.6°C.
