Speculation over a possible political realignment involving former Meghalaya chief minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Sangma has been doing the rounds in state political circles, with rumours suggesting that he may switch allegiance to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). The NPP, however, has categorically denied the claims, terming them baseless.

A senior NPP leader said there had been no outreach from the party to Sangma, nor had the former chief minister approached the NPP regarding any change in political affiliation. “There is absolutely no truth in these reports,” the leader said, dismissing the speculation as unfounded.

The rumours have emerged at a time of heightened political activity in Meghalaya, particularly ahead of the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections. A report circulating over the weekend claimed that Sangma was set to join the NPP, but it lacked confirmation from either the former chief minister or the ruling party.

The speculation has triggered debate within political circles. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has seen its influence in the state weaken in recent months, with several leaders exiting the party. Most recently, Sangma’s younger brother, Zenith Sangma, a former legislator, joined the Congress.

Sangma had publicly distanced himself from his brother’s decision, questioning whether the move would help Zenith achieve his political goals. His remarks further fuelled speculation about his own political future.

Both Sangma and NPP national president and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma are prominent leaders from the Garo Hills region and have long been viewed as rival contenders for Meghalaya’s top political post. While the idea of the two leaders working within the same political fold may appear unlikely to many, political observers note that unexpected shifts are not uncommon in the state’s political landscape.

For now, the NPP has firmly maintained that reports of Sangma joining the party have no basis, putting to rest, at least officially, the ongoing speculation.
