A 35-year-old Indian Navy technician on Monday has been arrested for allegedly murdering a woman in the Gajuwaka area of Visakhapatnam, dismembered the victim’s body and attempting to destroy evidence before surrendering to the police, police said.
The accused, identified as Chintada Ravindra, a native of Rajam in Vizianagaram district, was taken into custody by police following his surrender. The victim, Polipalli Mounika (29), had reportedly been in contact with Ravindra since 2020 after the two met through a dating application.
According to police, the two developed a relationship over time and would frequently meet at various locations across Visakhapatnam, including parks and theatres.
The police said Ravindra’s wife had gone to her parental home about a month ago for delivery. During this period, he allegedly invited Mounika to his flat in the Gajuwaka area on Sunday afternoon.
Police stated that an argument broke out between the two, following which the accused allegedly smothered her to death. Investigators further claimed that the crime was premeditated, as Ravindra had procured knives in advance.
In an attempt to conceal the crime, the accused allegedly dismembered the body, kept it in the refrigerator, and tried to dispose of evidence at multiple locations. Police said he carried out efforts to clean the crime scene and eliminate traces of the incident.
According to officials, Ravindra later contacted a friend, confessed to the crime, and, acting on the friend’s advice, surrendered at a police station.
During interrogation, the accused reportedly claimed that the victim had taken ₹3.5 lakh from him and had threatened to disclose their relationship to his wife, leading to frequent disputes.
Police teams from Gajuwaka Police Station have registered a case and launched searches in areas including Darapalem and nearby localities to recover further evidence.
