The city of Mumbai and its surrounding districts were lashed by torrential rains on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. With the continuation of rains through the day, the IMD issued a new warning of heavy rainfall which is expected to affect the area, thus hampering normal daily life. The weather department raised the alert level to 'red' for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar areas, predicting extremely heavy rains at isolated places. Meanwhile, surrounding areas were placed under an orange alert, with predictions of heavy to very heavy showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. These alerts, based on the forecast issued early on Wednesday, remain active for the next few hours and extend into the coming days, stretching up to July 4 in some areas.

While these warnings signal challenging weather ahead, many residents across Mumbai and neighbouring regions will be watching closely to see if the forecast fully materialises. The city is one of several regions in India that experienced a delayed monsoon this year, which triggered severe water shortages. Fortunately, the current heavy spells are already providing much-needed relief to Mumbai's reservoirs, with water levels across seven key lakes rising from 6.75 per cent to 7.18 per cent. After a delayed and drier-than-usual June, the monsoon is finally intensifying over western India, including Konkan and Goa, as the seasonal systems gain momentum.

In the 24 hours leading up to Wednesday morning, several areas of Mumbai recorded over 100 mm of rain, triggering predictable waterlogging in low-lying spots such as the Andheri subway and parts of Navi Mumbai. Public transport was also hit, with local trains on the Central and Western Railways hit by delays, and the Harbour line briefly disrupted by a broken overhead wire. On the roads, commuters faced slower traffic due to reduced visibility and growing congestion.

The southwest monsoon, which made a late arrival in India and faced a further delay reaching Mumbai, is now rapidly picking up pace. Forecasts indicate that the monsoon is also on the verge of arriving over Delhi-NCR, Punjab, and Haryana. These northern regions are similarly desperate for the rains to break, which will finally bring an end to the oppressive, humid heat that has persisted for weeks. The IMD expects this active rainfall to continue through early July, which will crucially support farming, replenish water supplies, and boost hydropower across the country, even as it tests the limits of urban drainage systems.
