The Madhya Pradesh government on Wednesday told the High Court that injuries found on actor-model Twisha Sharma’s body were ante-mortem and may have been caused during a “scuffle or struggle” before her death in the alleged dowry harassment case.

The submission was made during the hearing of pleas seeking cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to former judge Giribala Singh.

Appearing for the state, government counsel told the court that both Giribala Singh and her son Samarth Singh allegedly subjected Twisha to cruelty.

The state further alleged that Twisha was taunted over dowry demands and told that the amount spent by her family on the wedding was “not enough”.

During the hearing, the court asked whether the injuries mentioned in the post-mortem report were ante-mortem. The state replied in the affirmative and
said the report had recorded injuries on Twisha’s wrist, elbow and head.

According to the government, the possibility of the injuries being caused after death or while the body was being brought down had been ruled out in the post-mortem findings.

The state argued that the injuries could have occurred during a “scuffle or struggle” before her death.

Cruelty allegations raised

Referring to chats examined during the investigation, the government also claimed that Twisha’s pregnancy had triggered disputes within the family and that “serious comments” were repeatedly made against her.

When the court sought clarification on whether the allegations were directed against the husband or the mother-in-law, the state said both had allegedly subjected her to cruelty.

The government further accused Giribala Singh of not cooperating with the investigation despite notices being issued to her on May 13 and 14.

According to the state, police teams visiting her residence did not find her at home.

The prosecution also alleged before the court that the former judge was “not joining the probe but has time to portray a narrative in her favour”.

Twisha Sharma was found dead at her marital home earlier this month, following which police registered a case linked to alleged dowry harassment.

Investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding her death.
