MP Akoijam slams PM's silence on 'ignored crisis in Manipur'

Akoijam highlighted the severe humanitarian impact of the crisis, citing over 60,000 people displaced and 200 lives lost amidst a civil war-like situation where communities are forced into armed conflict for self-defense.

Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, newly elected MP from Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency, has criticised central leaders for their silence on the ongoing crisis in Manipur, calling it a reflection of colonial-era attitudes persisting into the post-colonial period.

During his address in Parliament presenting a motion of thanks, Dr. Akoijam expressed dismay over Prime Minister Modi's silence and the omission of Manipur's crisis from the President's speech, despite more than a year of turmoil in the state.

"The silence from the Prime Minister and the neglect of Manipur's plight in the highest addresses of the nation are deeply concerning. It reflects a continuation of colonial-era policies in modern governance," Dr. Akoijam remarked.

He highlighted the severe humanitarian impact of the crisis, citing over 60,000 people displaced and 200 lives lost amidst a civil war-like situation where communities are forced into armed conflict for self-defense.

"Manipur is one of the most militarised regions in the country, yet the Indian state has failed to protect its people. How can thousands lose their homes under the watch of extensive armed forces without national leadership addressing this?" he questioned.

Dr. Akoijam challenged the notion of nationalism, stating, "I will remain silent when the Prime Minister acknowledges Manipur's crisis and assures care for its people. That is true nationalism."

He criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressing disappointment in their complacency towards Manipur's suffering, contrasting it with the state's significant contributions to national honor through figures like Major Laishram Jotin and sportswomen like Mary Kom and Mirabai Chanu.

"It is a dishonor to these icons and to Manipur itself when the central government remains indifferent to our crisis," Dr. Akoijam added, urging empathy and action from national leaders.
