Mizoram recorded 145 tuberculosis (TB)-related deaths in 2025, the highest toll in the past six years, raising concerns over disease severity and delayed detection, according to official data released under the National TB Elimination Programme.

The data shows that 2,275 people were diagnosed with TB during the year, including 911 women. While the total number of cases was marginally lower than the 2,291 reported in 2024, the number of fatalities continued to rise, indicating persistent challenges in early diagnosis and effective disease management.

Officials said TB-related deaths in the state have followed a steady upward trend since 2020, when 31 fatalities were recorded. The toll increased to 46 in 2021, 87 in 2022, 119 in 2023 and 136 in 2024, before rising further in 2025.

Of the total cases reported last year, 1,900 were detected at government health facilities, while 375 cases were identified at private centres. The data also revealed that 146 patients were diagnosed with multi-drug-resistant TB, while 267 were found to be co-infected with TB and HIV/AIDS.

Children accounted for a significant proportion of new infections, with 141 patients aged below 14 years. Health officials said approximately 84 per cent of those diagnosed during the year were successfully treated.

District-wise figures showed Aizawl recording the highest number of TB cases at 1,569, followed by Lunglei with 155 and Kolasib with 138. Serchhip reported the lowest number of cases at 52.

Health officials noted that community participation under the PM TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan has been increasing, with more than 100 individuals registering through the ‘Nikshay’ online platform to adopt TB patients or provide financial assistance.

The initiative aims to enhance community involvement, improve treatment outcomes and strengthen government efforts through voluntary and corporate social responsibility contributions, as India works towards its goal of eliminating tuberculosis.
