Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday continued his high-pitch campaign in West Bengal, combining sharp attacks on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) with a focused outreach to women voters, allegations of “syndicate raj,” and a warning over emerging digital misinformation.

Addressing a rally in Kushmandi in South Dinajpur, Modi emphasised women’s safety and empowerment as a key pillar of the BJP’s campaign. He accused the state government of failing to ensure dignity and security for women, while promising transformative changes if the BJP comes to power.

The Prime Minister referred to the chaos during an event at Salt Lake Stadium where soccer icon Lionel Messi was present, alleging that the “syndicate raj” culture in Bengal had even infiltrated sports. “The entire world witnessed the chaos that day. The syndicate network did not even spare football,” he said, terming it an example of “lawlessness” under the TMC regime.

He also invoked the legacy of iconic football clubs Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, noting that despite their historic rivalry, they had united in protest following the incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Modi reiterated that a BJP government would ensure better conditions for women across the state.

Highlighting the party’s election roadmap, Modi described the BJP’s “Sankalp Patra” as a “Bharosa Patra,” outlining commitments for Bengal’s development. He reiterated earlier promises, including the release of a “White Paper” on crimes such as murder and sexual violence during the TMC’s tenure.

The Prime Minister also spotlighted development plans for North Bengal, including the establishment of institutions like AIIMS and NIFT. He criticised the state’s education infrastructure, pointing out that Dinajpur University lacks a permanent campus.

Drawing comparisons, Modi cited higher representation of women in police forces in states like Bihar, contrasting it with lower figures in Bengal, and promised improvements under a Bharatiya Janata Party government.

He further highlighted initiatives for tribal communities, noting that the Centre observes the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Divas’ and has worked towards their upliftment. Referring to President Droupadi Murmu, he alleged that even she had faced disrespect during her visit to Bengal.

Later, addressing a rally in Jangipur, Murshidabad, Modi issued a caution over the potential misuse of technology in the elections. Without naming anyone directly, he warned that “deepfake” videos generated using artificial intelligence could be circulated to mislead voters.

His remarks come amid controversy surrounding a viral video allegedly featuring Humayun Kabir, who has recently floated his own political outfit after leaving the TMC. While the authenticity of the video remains unverified, Kabir has claimed it to be AI-generated.

Political observers believe Modi’s warning was a strategic move aimed at creating awareness — and possibly doubt — among voters regarding the authenticity of such content, particularly in sensitive regions like Murshidabad.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has already clarified that the BJP will not align with Kabir under any circumstances.

With campaigning intensifying across the state, Modi’s twin focus on governance, women’s safety, and digital misinformation reflects the BJP’s broader strategy as West Bengal heads toward a crucial electoral battle.
