Mehbooba urges Centre to stand with Iran amid ongoing war

The appeal follows a series of protests—some of which turned violent—in various parts of Kashmir in response to the US-Israel military campaign against Iran and the killing of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with members of Iran’s Security Council and his family.

Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday invoked deep historical and cultural ties between Kashmir and Iran to urge the Central government to extend solidarity with Tehran during the ongoing regional war.

Addressing a party meeting in Srinagar, she said, "Islam came to Kashmir via Iran, along with its craft, culture, traditions and food.” She highlighted these longstanding connections between the two regions. Mufti declared that the people of Kashmir “have and will always stand in solidarity with the people and government of Iran in these difficult times.”

The PDP meeting passed a resolution expressing full support and solidarity with the people of Iran. She further appealed to the Government of India to stand with Iran at a time when moral and diplomatic support is needed, noting that “Iran has always supported India in good and bad times, including on international issues.”

Mufti also called on Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the DGP of the Kashmir zone to release all youths detained during recent mourning protests across the Kashmir Valley.

The appeal follows a series of protests—some of which turned violent—in various parts of Kashmir in response to the US-Israel military campaign against Iran and the killing of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with members of Iran’s Security Council and his family.

Restrictions were reimposed on Friday in multiple Shia-dominated areas of central Kashmir after large-scale demonstrations against the war.
