The Meghalaya government on Monday approved the establishment of a specialised Urban Warfare Training Facility (UWTF) to enhance the operational preparedness of the State police in tackling emerging urban security challenges.
According to a notification issued by the Home (Police) Department, the facility will be developed at Mawiong, about 20 km from Shillong. The proposed centre is designed to provide realistic and scalable training modules for police personnel operating in complex urban environments.
Officials said the UWTF will offer training ranging from basic close-quarter battle techniques to advanced operations. These will include multi-storey building clearance, hostage rescue missions, breaching procedures and the use of modern urban surveillance systems. The initiative is expected to strengthen the State’s response capabilities, minimise risks to security forces and improve coordination among various agencies during urban operations.
In a separate decision, the State government also approved the establishment of a Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare (CIJW) school at Baghmara in South Garo Hills district.
The CIJW school will focus on specialised training for State police personnel and commando units involved in counter-insurgency and jungle warfare operations. Officials said the facility will also cater to special units deployed in dense forests and difficult terrain, significantly enhancing Meghalaya’s internal security preparedness.
