The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Sunil Deodhar to issue a public apology for his alleged remarks that reportedly hurt the sentiments of Christians in the state.

The controversy arose after Deodhar addressed a gathering at Pynther in the Pynursla Sub-Division of East Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya.

In a letter addressed to Deodhar, BJP Meghalaya State General Secretary Wankitbok Pohshna said the remarks were perceived as offensive by members of the Christian community. He noted that the objections were linked to alleged derogatory references to the Bible and Jesus Christ, which caused distress among Christians and others who value interfaith harmony.

Pohshna described such statements as inappropriate in a modern and progressive society. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently shown respect towards the Christian community by participating in Christmas celebrations and highlighting the teachings of Jesus Christ.

At the same time, Pohshna reaffirmed the party’s commitment to preserving and promoting the indigenous Khasi faith, Niam Khasi Niamtre.

Responding to the controversy, Deodhar clarified that his speech at the Indigenous Faith Conference in Pynther was not intended to target Christianity. He said he respects Jesus Christ and the Christian community and expressed regret if his remarks had hurt religious sentiments.

The matter has sparked discussion in the state, where religious harmony remains a sensitive and important issue.
