In a major breakthrough ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Jharkhand Police jointly foiled a massive drug trafficking plot aimed at influencing the polls through narcotics in Simdega district.
Acting on a tip-off, the agencies seized 441 kilograms of marijuana being smuggled from Odisha to Bihar via Simdega. The seized consignment is estimated to be worth around ₹3 crore in the illegal market. One trafficker was arrested during the operation.
Addressing a joint press conference, NCB’s Bihar-Jharkhand Zonal Director and Simdega Superintendent of Police M Arshi said that they had received intelligence about a large consignment of marijuana en-route to Bihar.
Acting swiftly, a joint team of NCB and Simdega Police set up a checkpoint near Chhagarbandha under Kolebira police station limits on National Highway 143 and intercepted a Haryana-registered truck.
During a thorough search, officials discovered a cleverly concealed secret cabin inside the vehicle. From it, they recovered 85 packets containing a total of 441 kilograms of marijuana. The truck driver and the trafficker were arrested on the spot.
Officials said the operation was a crucial step toward dismantling the narcotics supply chain ahead of the state elections. They further added that their crackdown on drug trafficking would continue, emphasising that the street value of the seized marijuana would have been significantly higher if sold in smaller quantities.
