Maggots were found in a midday meal served at a Gurukul school in Telangana’s Jagtial on Saturday, July 11, prompting a furious response from the principal when she was questioned over the incident.
The issue occurred at the Telangana Social Welfare Girls’ Residential School in Metpally, where 530 students were served maggot-infested rice and spoilt vegetables. When challenged about the quality of the food, the Principal, D Madhuri, lost her temper and demanded to know who had the right to question her. A video shared on social media clearly showed maggots in the rice and dal served at the school, whilst vegetables such as ladies' fingers were found to be completely rotten.
This incident in Jagtial is the latest in a series of cases in Telangana where students have been served contaminated food at residential schools. Only days earlier, on July 9, at least 40 students fell ill after consuming maggot-infested khichdi for breakfast in the Nagarkurnool district.
According to one student who fortunately avoided eating the meal, he was about to head for breakfast at around 9 am when his peers warned him that the khichdi was crawling with maggots, by which time several children had already started vomiting and complaining of severe stomach aches. All the affected students were immediately transferred to the Achampet Government Hospital for treatment. Achampet MLA Dr Vamshi Krishna and Nagarkurnool MP Mallu Ravi, who were in Delhi at the time, contacted the doctors, the Revenue Divisional Officer, and the Nagarkurnool Collector to ensure that the children received proper medical attention.
