A total of six Assam police personnel have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Tinsukia District and Sessions Court on Wednesday.

The court, presided by Judge Dipankar Bora, convicted the policemen under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for the murder of Ajit Sonowal.

The incident occurred on October 7, 2013, when Sonowal was brutally beaten by the policemen at Ambikapur market.

Despite being transferred to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, Sonowal succumbed to his injuries.

An FIR was lodged by Sonowal's father at Sadiya Police Station on October 9, 2013.

Following a thorough investigation, a chargesheet was filed, and the trial commenced.
