The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is set to observe ‘Deeksha Diwas’ across Telangana on a grand scale on November 29. BRS working president KT Rama Rao has instructed party ranks to make it a grand event commemorating the historic fast-unto-death undertaken by party president and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao 15 years ago as part of the fight for statehood.
Addressing party MLAs, MLCs, MPs, district presidents, and general body members through a teleconference on Saturday, KT Rama Rao called the occasion a most significant chapter in the history of the state. The BRS Chief embarked on the fast with the slogan — "Telangana vachudo — KCR Sachchudo" (Either Telangana or KCR’s death) — demonstrating his steely resolve to achieve statehood.
The indefinite hunger strike eventually forced the Centre to announce the formation of Telangana state and remains a symbol of supreme sacrifice in the statehood movement. "Deeksha Diwas is a glorious milestone in Telangana’s history. We must celebrate it with pride and enthusiasm across every district," KT Rama Rao told party leaders.
He instructed district units to conduct preparatory meetings at all party headquarters on November 26. MLAs, former MLAs, MPs, MLCs, former ministers, ex-corporation chairpersons, and other key leaders must be invited to these meetings to finalise a detailed action plan for the successful conduct of the Deeksha Diwas programmes. The main events will be organised at party offices in every district headquarters.
KT Rama Rao insisted that party members ensure the complete decoration of party offices with banners and flexies by the evening of November 28. While the party office premises are beautified, the participation of at least 1,000 key party workers and leaders in each district must be ensured.
The programme will commence by paying tributes to Telangana Thalli and the martyrs’ memorial, followed by milk abhishekam (offering) to a large cut-out of the BRS Supremo.
Mandatory photo exhibitions must be organised, featuring historic moments, news clippings, and developments related to the 2009 fast-unto-death. The central office will supply photos, while the districts may add local content. He specifically requested that speakers capable of vividly recounting the memories of the Telangana movement and the significance of Deeksha Diwas, rather than delivering routine political speeches, be invited.
Party members were also instructed to organise social welfare activities such as fruit distribution and annadanam (mass feeding) wherever possible. Special fruit distribution will be held at NIMS Hospital in Hyderabad on the occasion.
The BRS youth and student wings must organise Deeksha Diwas programmes in every university campus and wear special T-shirts bearing K Chandrashekhar Rao’s portrait and the Deeksha Diwas logo.
The BRS leader emphasised that the celebrations should not only reinforce the party’s commitment to Telangana’s pride but also inspire the younger generation about the sacrifices made for statehood. The BRS leadership is confident that Deeksha Diwas will be observed with unprecedented enthusiasm across the state on November 29.
