The woman accused of murdering her fiancé in Pune allegedly told investigators that killing him seemed "easier" than calling off their wedding and facing her family, according to police sources, as the investigation into the high-profile case gathered pace.

Police allege that Siya Goyal, along with her alleged lover Chetan Chaudhary, conspired to kill realtor Ketan Agarwal, who died after falling from a cliff at Lohagad Fort on June 18.

During questioning, Goyal allegedly confessed that she chose to kill Agarwal rather than cancel their wedding, scheduled for November, because she did not want to hurt her family's sentiments, sources in Pune Rural Police said.

Investigators have formed six teams from Pune and Lonavala police to probe the case from multiple angles. Goyal's parents were questioned on Saturday, while her brother Sahil Goyal was interrogated for a second time.

According to police, Sahil told investigators that he knew Chaudhary and that his sister met him at one of his cricket matches before the two grew close after reconnecting at a friend's Diwali party last year.

Police sources said call records showed Goyal and Chaudhary spoke more than 2,000 times since January, spending a combined 238 hours on calls, strengthening the suspected conspiracy angle.

While Goyal's parents have denied ever meeting or speaking to Chaudhary, her lawyer has described him only as a friend.

Investigators said they had established the alleged roles of both accused and were now attempting to recover deleted data from their mobile phones to gather further evidence.

Police are also questioning the matchmakers who arranged the marriage between the two families as part of the ongoing investigation.
