Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve has completed all necessary preparations for the translocation of nearly 50 wild Asiatic water buffaloes to Kanha Tiger Reserve, officials said.

While the initial plan proposed shifting around 15 buffaloes in the first phase, authorities have now decided to begin cautiously by relocating only five to six animals. The move is aimed at assessing feasibility and addressing logistical challenges before scaling up the operation.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, Arun Vignesh, stated that starting with a smaller group would allow officials to evaluate the process and make necessary adjustments for future phases. “This phased approach will help us better understand the operational requirements before moving larger numbers,” he said.

The capture of the buffaloes is scheduled to begin on March 18 and 19 using tranquilization methods. The animals will then be carefully loaded onto transport vehicles and are expected to be moved to Kanha Tiger Reserve on March 21. Senior forest officials and veterinarians will accompany the animals throughout the journey to ensure their safety.

Kohora Central Range Officer Bibhuti Ranjan Gogoi informed that a mock drill was conducted earlier this week to ensure smooth execution of the operation. The drill included procedures for tranquilizing the animals, handling emergencies, and safely transporting them.

A dedicated implementation committee has also been formed to oversee the process. The committee is being led by the Divisional Forest Officer and the Deputy Conservator of Forests of the national park.

The translocation initiative is part of ongoing conservation efforts aimed at strengthening wild buffalo populations and ensuring their long-term survival in protected habitats.
