Boosting women empowerment initiatives in the State, the Jharkhand government has launched a unique scheme for widow remarriage in the State.  Under the ‘Vidhwa Punarvivah Protsahan Yojana’ (widow remarriage incentive scheme) launched by the government on Wednesday women marrying after the death of their husband will be given an incentive of Rs 2 lakh.

The scheme provides that the widow should be at a marriageable age and should not be a taxpayer, pensioner or government employee.

To get the benefit of the scheme women have to apply within a year from the date of remarriage and submit the death certificate of their husband and proof of remarriage.

The scheme has been launched to assist women financially, who are alone and economically vulnerable after the death of their husbands so that they can make a new beginning in their lives, said officials.

Women, Child Development and Social Welfare Secretary Manoj Kumar said that the ‘Vidhwa Punarvivah Protsahan Yojana’ was launched by Chief Minister Champai Soren on Wednesday. The scheme, which provides Rs 2 lakh financial assistance to widows choosing remarriage, will help women gain self-confidence and change social opinions towards remarriage.

Launching the scheme on Wednesday Soren distributed Rs 14 lakh among seven beneficiaries of the scheme. He also announced that the women Anganwadi workers will now get a raised honorarium of Rs 9500 and helpers will get Rs 4750 every month.

Notably, the State government has also lowered the age limit for old age pension beneficiaries belonging to women and ST, SC categories. Now, women and ST, SC category beneficiaries are getting an old age pension of Rs 1000 per month from the age of 50 years.

The first instalment of pension was transferred through DBT in the bank accounts of 1 lakh 58 thousand 218 tribal, Dalit and women beneficiaries aged between 50 to 60 years on Wednesday.
