The announcement of elections to two Rajya Sabha seats from Jharkhand has intensified political activity in the state, with the ruling INDIA bloc facing an early test of unity ahead of the June 18 polls.
The Election Commission of India on Friday declared the schedule for biennial Rajya Sabha elections, under which voting for 24 seats across 10 states will be conducted on June 18. Counting of votes will also take place on the same day.
In Jharkhand, the election has gained significance as two Rajya Sabha seats are set to go to polls. One of the seats has remained vacant since 2025 following the demise of former Chief Minister Shibu Soren. The second seat is falling vacant with the tenure of BJP Rajya Sabha MP Deepak Prakash ending on June 21.
With the poll dates announced, political parties in the state have accelerated their preparations, though no alliance partner has officially declared its candidate so far.
The elections are expected to become a crucial political exercise for the ruling coalition comprising Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Indian National Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal.

Going by the current numbers in the Assembly, the alliance is in a comfortable position to win both seats if it remains united. However, the process of deciding candidates could expose internal fault lines within the coalition.
While leaders from the Congress have made informal claims for a Rajya Sabha berth, JMM leaders have publicly asserted the party’s strong position in the alliance, indicating that negotiations over seat-sharing may not be smooth.
Political observers believe the Congress is currently not in a strong position to aggressively push its claim due to internal organisational issues in the state unit.
Rumours of factionalism and a possible split within the party recently created unrest among workers, forcing senior leaders to publicly deny reports of any division.
The situation became more complicated after a group of Congress MLAs travelled to New Delhi recently to raise concerns directly before the party high command over several organisational and political issues.
The developments have highlighted growing unease within the state Congress unit at a time when alliance coordination is becoming critical.
In contrast, JMM has already begun preparing strategically for the Rajya Sabha contest and appears keen to maintain its dominance within the ruling alliance. Party leaders have been making consistent public statements, signalling confidence ahead of the election.
The Rajya Sabha polls are now being viewed not merely as an electoral exercise, but also as a test of political cohesion within the INDIA bloc in Jharkhand. The coming days are likely to witness intense negotiations among alliance partners over candidate selection and power balance within the coalition.
