Insurgent groups in Northeast India call for a boycott of Independence Day, urging a shutdown across several states.

Eight banned insurgent groups in Manipur, including the Coordination Committee (CorCom), have declared a total shutdown on August 15, opposing the celebration of India's Independence Day.

The groups have urged the people of Manipur to observe the day as a "black day" and to abstain from participating in the celebrations.

Among the prominent groups, the Socialist Revolutionary Party (SOREPA) has announced a general strike from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., while CorCom has called for a complete shutdown from 1:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The SOREPA (ASUK) has also joined in, urging the residents to mark the day by waving black flags as a sign of protest.

The insurgent groups claim that India's Independence Day symbolises oppression for Kangleipak (Manipur), attributing the ongoing violence and unrest in the state to India's alleged regressive policies.

They argue that the day is a reminder of continued sorrow rather than a cause for celebration.

In parallel, separatist groups NSCN (Yung Aung) and ULFA (Independent) have called for a boycott of Independence Day in Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.

They announced a complete closure from midnight to 8:00 p.m. on August 15, urging "freedom-loving Wesean citizens" to support their cause under the slogan "One People One Region One Vision."

Security forces are on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure the safety of citizens during the Independence Day celebrations.

Essential services, including healthcare, media, and religious activities, are exempt from the shutdown.
