In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections of 2024, Assam braces itself for a riveting political showdown as seasoned leaders and fresh faces vie for electoral victory. 

 

Among the candidates in the first phase of polls in Assam, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal stands out as one of the most prominent figures, despite being among the senior contestants at 62 years old.

 

Hailing from the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency, Sonowal's political journey has been illustrious, transitioning from his days as the President of the All Assam Students Union to becoming a formidable force in Assam's political landscape. 

 

His tenure as Chief Minister of Assam from 2016 to 2021 marked a significant chapter in the state's political narrative.

 

Accompanying Sonowal in the league of seasoned campaigners are notable figures such as Rajya Sabha MP Ranjit Dutta, a stalwart at 67 years old, and Congress candidate Uday Shankar Hazarika, aged 65, both contending from Lakhimpur constituency.

 

In contrast to these seasoned contenders, the youthful vigor of the electoral race is embodied by candidates like Gobin Biswakarma, a 27-year-old Independent hopeful from Lakhimpur, and Saleh Ahmed Majumdar of the Republican Party of India, aged 29, contesting from Kaziranga.

 

The battleground is set with candidates spanning various age demographics, from the youngest aspirants in their twenties to seasoned veterans in their sixties. 

 

The electoral discourse in Assam promises a diverse spectrum of representation, with candidates representing varied political ideologies and aspirations.

 

Constituencies including Kaziranga, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, and Lakhimpur will cast their votes on April 19.
