Honouring such an iconic figure, they said, demands the highest standards of artistic authenticity and respect— something the present statue fails to uphold.

Widespread resentment has erupted within the Bengali community over the proposed installation of a statue of Rabindranath Tagore at Rabindra Bhavan in Ranchi. Members of the community allege that the statue — currently under preparation — does not resemble the revered poet-philosopher in appearance, expression, or stature, and instead presents a “distorted and inappropriate depiction” of the Nobel laureate.

Community representatives say the design fails to reflect Tagore’s true personality, intellectual depth, and dignified aura. Tagore, they stressed, was not only a literary giant but also the composer of India’s national anthem Jana Gana Mana, a globally celebrated thinker, artist, educationist, and symbol of humanism.

Honouring such an iconic figure, they said, demands the highest standards of artistic authenticity and respect— something the present statue fails to uphold.

According to the protestors, the facial features and expression of the statue are inconsistent with Tagore’s known appearance, potentially misleading younger generations about his identity.

They argue that this reflects cultural insensitivity and disregard for Tagore’s immense contributions to India’s intellectual and artistic heritage.

In response, representatives of various organisations and cultural bodies, under the banner of Astitwa – Akhil Bharatiya Bangla Bhashi Samanvay Parishad, submitted a memorandum to the Ranchi Deputy Commissioner recently. The memorandum demands a thorough review of the statue’s design before installation.

The community has urged the district administration to form a committee comprising art experts, historians, and representatives of the Bengali community to reassess the statue.

They have also requested that the unveiling be put on hold and that a life-size poster be used for the programme in the interim, ensuring that Tagore's dignity and legacy are respected.

Parishad’s members said that they have appealed to safeguard the true honour of Rabindranath Tagore. The form in which the statue is being presented deeply hurts their sentiments.
