A fourth-year female student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Palakkad was injured after being assaulted by an unidentified assailant inside the campus on Monday night, police said.
According to police officials, the incident occurred around 8:30 PM at the institute’s campus in Kanjikode while the student was walking from her hostel room to the dining hall.
Police said the attacker struck the student on the head from behind using a sharp object and fled the scene immediately. The student sustained injuries to her head and back and was rushed to a private hospital in Coimbatore for treatment. Her condition is reported to be stable.
Following the incident, nearly 200 students staged a protest at the campus gates late Monday night, expressing concern over security lapses and demanding the immediate arrest of the attacker. Protesters also called for stronger safety measures on campus.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the campus to identify and trace the assailant.
There has been no official statement from the institute administration regarding the incident so far.
Police said further details will be shared as the investigation progresses.
